**Gurdaspur, Punjab** – The Congress party has accused the Punjab Police of preventing party leader Rahul Gandhi from visiting a flood-affected village across the Ravi river in Gurdaspur district on Monday. Gandhi was in Punjab to assess the damage and interact with victims in Amritsar and Gurdaspur following recent floods.
Gandhi visited Ghonewal village in Amritsar and Gurchak village in Gurdaspur. However, his planned visit to Toor, a border village across the Ravi River, was allegedly blocked by local police citing security concerns, according to Punjab Congress chief Amrinder Singh Raja Warring.
Video footage shows Gandhi questioning police officials about the restriction. “You are telling me that you cannot keep me safe on Indian territory?” Gandhi asked, challenging the security rationale. He further questioned whether the village was part of India if he was not allowed access.
Other Congress leaders, including former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi and senior leader Partap Singh Bajwa, have echoed Warring’s criticism, accusing the Punjab government of insensitivity and using flimsy security pretexts to prevent Gandhi from reaching the worst-hit areas. Bajwa alleged a political motive behind the decision, claiming both AAP and BJP leaders have failed to visit the affected border villages.
