**”This Doesn’t Happen to a Kid Like Me”: Stephen Graham Wins Emmy, Pays Tribute to Kirkby Roots**
**Los Angeles, CA** – British actor Stephen Graham took home the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series on Sunday night for his role in the hit Netflix drama “Adolescence,” a series that dominated the awards ceremony with a total of six wins. “Adolescence” tells the story of Eddie Miller (Graham), the father of a teenage boy accused of murder.
In an emotional acceptance speech, the 52-year-old Graham, who grew up in Kirkby, Merseyside, dedicated the award to his family and friends, and especially his wife, Hannah Walters, calling her “my rock, my world, my soulmate.” He also highlighted his humble beginnings, saying, “This kind of thing doesn’t happen to a kid like me. I’m just a mixed-race kid from a block of flats in a place called Kirkby.”
Graham, who is of Jamaican heritage through his father, previously spoke about grappling with his identity growing up and how his stepfather, who he affectionately calls Pops, instilled in him a sense of cultural pride. He also credited his stepfather for fostering his love of film, recalling trips to Quarry Green video shop in Kirkby.
His career trajectory has been nothing short of remarkable, starting with his early work at the Everyman Youth Theatre in Liverpool, followed by a breakthrough performance in Shane Meadows’ “This Is England” in 2006 and subsequently leading roles in both British and American film and television. Graham has been open about his struggles with mental health and has used his platform to destigmatize these problems, demonstrating that anything is possible.
“Adolescence” also celebrated a win for Owen Cooper, who at just 15 years old, became the youngest-ever male Emmy winner for Outstanding Supporting Actor.
Graham’s speech served as an inspiration, emphasizing that dreams are attainable regardless of one’s background. His heartfelt words resonated with the audience, celebrating the transformative power of art.
