**HENDERSON, Nev.** – The Las Vegas Raiders are holding their breath as star rookie tight end Brock Bowers is listed as questionable for Monday night’s highly anticipated game against the Los Angeles Chargers. Bowers is battling a knee injury sustained during the second half of last week’s victory over the New England Patriots.
Despite missing practice Thursday and Friday, Bowers returned to the field Saturday, sporting a brace and sleeve on his left knee. Head Coach Pete Carroll expressed optimism about Bowers’ availability, stating, “He practiced great. He did really well today.”
While Bowers confirmed he felt good during practice, he remained cautious. “I don’t know, it’s hard to say,” Bowers said when asked about his optimism. “I’m just going to keep working out and see how I feel the rest of the day, tomorrow and the next day. So, we’ll see.”
Bowers’ presence is crucial for the Raiders’ offense. The dynamic rookie led all tight ends in receiving yards last season (1,194) and had an impressive debut alongside quarterback Geno Smith, hauling in five catches for 103 yards.
However, the Raiders are confident in their tight end depth should Bowers be sidelined. Michael Mayer, a 2023 second-round pick, is ready to step up after a strong Week 1 performance where he recorded four catches for 38 yards. Offensive Coordinator Chip Kelly praised Mayer’s versatility, noting his ability to catch the ball underneath, run after the catch, and block effectively. Kelly also highlighted the team’s overall depth at the position, including Ian Thomas.
“I think [there aren’t] many people [who] have that luxury to have two talented players like that. And I’ll throw Ian [Thomas] in there, too,” Kelly said. “To have three tight ends that can play and have proven that they can play in the NFL is a real big deal.”
In other injury news, starting linebacker Elandon Roberts (elbow) is set to play after a full practice on Saturday. However, rookie center Jackson Powers-Johnson has been ruled out after suffering a concussion in Thursday’s practice. Alex Cappa is slated to start at right guard.
The Raiders will be monitoring Bowers’ progress closely leading up to Monday night’s game, hoping their star tight end can suit up for the crucial AFC West matchup.
