Sun Sep 14 06:24:24 UTC 2025: **China Rejects Trump’s Tariff Threat, Urges Peace Talks and Multilateralism**

**Ljubljana, Slovenia** – China has responded to former US President Donald Trump’s call for NATO to impose hefty tariffs on Beijing over its continued purchase of Russian oil, with Foreign Minister Wang Yi emphasizing the importance of peace talks and multilateralism in resolving international conflicts.

Speaking at a press conference in Ljubljana after meeting with Slovenian Deputy Prime Minister Tanja Fajon, Wang Yi reiterated China’s commitment to promoting peaceful resolutions to global issues. “Wars cannot solve problems, and sanctions would only complicate them,” Wang stated, according to reports in China Daily. He emphasized that China does not participate in or plan wars but focuses on encouraging peace talks and political settlements through dialogue.

Trump’s proposal, posted on Truth Social, suggested NATO should impose tariffs of 50-100% on China, arguing that it would pressure Russia to end the war in Ukraine. “China has a strong control, and even grip, over Russia, and these powerful tariffs will break that grip,” Trump wrote.

Wang Yi, however, subtly rejected this approach, calling for strengthened multilateral mechanisms and upholding the principles of the UN Charter. He also urged cooperation between China and Europe, stating they should be “friends rather than rivals” and make the right choices “amid the greatest changes in a century.”

Trump’s tariff proposal follows accusations that Chinese President Xi Jinping was conspiring against the United States, shortly after China held its largest-ever military parade, attended by Vladimir Putin.
