Sat Sep 13 01:20:00 UTC 2025: **Hyderabad Under Flood Alert as Reservoirs Overflow Amid Heavy Rains**
Hyderabad, Telangana – Authorities have issued a flood warning for Hyderabad’s Himayat Sagar and Osman Sagar reservoirs after heavy rainfall upstream caused significant inflows. The Hyderabad Metro Water Supply & Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB) has opened the gates of both reservoirs to release water into the Musi River.
As of Friday morning, Osman Sagar’s water level stood just below its full capacity, with an inflow of 2,300 cusecs and an outflow of 2,028 cusecs through six opened gates. Himayat Sagar is similarly close to capacity, receiving 5,500 cusecs of inflow and releasing 5,215 cusecs through three opened gates.
The Cyberabad traffic police have closed the service road at Exit 17 due to the water release from Himayat Sagar, diverting traffic through alternative routes to minimize disruption.
The heavy rainfall, continuing for a second day, has disrupted normal life across Telangana, with Hanumakonda, Karimnagar, and Medak districts particularly affected. Overflows from water bodies have led to inundation in low-lying areas and impacted vehicular movement. The Bhuvanagiri-Chityala road in Yadadri Bhuvanagiri district is closed due to flooding.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts continued heavy rain for Telangana through Saturday. Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has placed the entire administration on alert, ordering the evacuation of residents from vulnerable structures and coordinated rescue operations by various departments, including HYDRAA, GHMC, SDRF, Fire, Traffic, and Police. The Irrigation department is monitoring flood inflows at critical infrastructure points.
Residents living near the Musi River and in low-lying areas are urged to remain vigilant and follow official advisories.
