**Thiruvananthapuram, India – September 13, 2025** – In a poignant display of altruism, the family of Biljith Biju, an 18-year-old from Kerala, donated his organs after he was declared brain-dead following a tragic road accident in Kochi. The donation, facilitated by the Kerala State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (K-SOTTO), will provide a new lease on life for eight individuals across the state.

Biljith, a first-year engineering student, sustained severe injuries on September 2nd when his motorcycle was struck by a lorry. Despite efforts to save him, doctors confirmed brainstem death on Friday. In their grief, Biljith’s family made the selfless decision to donate his organs, offering hope to those on the Mrithasanjeevani waiting list.

“This act of compassion is deeply moving,” said Health Minister Veena George. “We are immensely grateful to Biljith’s family for their generosity in this difficult time.”

The donated organs were swiftly allocated to patients in need. Biljith’s heart was successfully transplanted into a 13-year-old girl at Lisie Hospital, Kochi. His kidneys were provided to patients with end-stage renal disease at Kozhikode Government Medical College Hospital and Rajagiri Hospital, Ernakulam. The liver, small intestines, and pancreas were received by Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences, Ernakulam, for their patients suffering from end-stage organ failure. Both corneas were retrieved for transplant as well.

K-SOTTO lauded the family’s decision, highlighting the importance of organ donation in saving lives and the ongoing efforts to promote awareness through the Mrithasanjeevani program.
