GREEN BAY, WI – The Green Bay Packers defense made a statement in their 27-13 victory over the Detroit Lions, with a dominant pass rush led by both newcomer Micah Parsons and, surprisingly, second-year player Lukas Van Ness. While Parsons, fresh off a trade to Green Bay, garnered the lion’s share of media attention after a promising debut with one sack and three pressures, it was Van Ness who quietly stole the show.
According to ESPN Research, Van Ness led the Packers with four pressures on Lions quarterback Jared Goff, exceeding even Parsons’ total of three. Van Ness, the Packers’ 2023 first-round pick, showcased his potential and versatility, even lining up at defensive tackle in certain formations and recording a sack.
“I know what I’m capable of, and I think I showed a little bit of that today,” Van Ness stated.
The arrival of Parsons had many questioning Van Ness’s role on the team, as Parsons is expected to eventually take over a starting role. However, Parsons has actively taken on a mentor role, praising Van Ness’s selflessness and overall game.
“I think Van Ness is going to have his best year yet this year,” Parsons said. “I’m going to make sure of it.” He also likened Van Ness’s potential to that of Cameron Wake or Julius Peppers, two highly successful pass rushers.
Van Ness said he appreciates the new opportunity to learn, and is already benefitting from having Parsons by his side.
The Packers pressured Goff on 14 of his 43 dropbacks, largely without relying on blitzes. Defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley deployed a unique defensive front featuring Parsons, Van Ness, and Rashan Gary simultaneously, often shifting Van Ness inside.
The team is still working on coming up with a nickname for Van Ness, but is proud of his performance in the season opener.
