Fri Sep 12 16:15:52 UTC 2025: ## Trump Eyes Memphis for Federal Crime Intervention, Cites “Deeply Troubled” City

**Washington, D.C.** – President Donald Trump has announced plans to deploy National Guard troops to Memphis, Tennessee, citing the city’s high crime rate and vowing to replicate the federal intervention seen in Washington, D.C. last month. The move follows a pattern of the Trump administration focusing on crime in Democratic-led cities, even as FBI statistics show a decline in violent crime rates in many urban areas.

“We’re going to Memphis. Memphis is deeply troubled,” Trump told Fox News on Friday, adding that the mayor is “happy” about the impending federal assistance. The Memphis Mayor’s office did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Memphis, a city of over 600,000, struggles with high levels of poverty, significantly exceeding the national average. The city’s violent crime rate is also among the highest in the nation, according to FBI data. The Justice Department previously deployed federal agents to Memphis in 2020 to combat violent crime during Trump’s first term.

Trump also indicated that New Orleans could be next, mirroring Memphis as another Democratic-leaning city within a Republican-controlled state. While he has repeatedly threatened to deploy the National Guard to Chicago, the President acknowledged resistance from local officials and described the city as “hostile” with “professional agitators.”

This aggressive stance on crime comes after the administration’s controversial move to place the Washington, D.C. police department under direct federal control and deploying federal law enforcement to patrol the streets. Ironically, Justice Department data reveals that Washington D.C. saw a 30-year low in violent crime in 2024.

Previously, Trump deployed troops to Los Angeles in June by federalizing the California National Guard over Governor Newsom’s objections to protect federal property from immigration raid protests. The controversial intervention led to a lawsuit from California.
