**Chennai, September 12, 2025** – Kolathur police have arrested a gang of five individuals allegedly involved in a fraudulent land sale that swindled a Chennai resident out of ₹92 lakh. The suspects are accused of impersonating a property owner and using forged documents to complete the transaction.
According to police reports, the victim, Nandakumar, 44, of Periyar Nagar, sought to purchase land in 2022. He responded to a social media advertisement posted by Ramesh Kumar, who claimed to be a real estate agent offering a 1200-sq.ft. plot in Poompuhar Nagar, Kolathur.
Ramesh Kumar introduced Nandakumar to another agent, Murali, who purportedly held the property documents. These documents indicated that the land was owned by one Dileep Kumar, who had granted power of attorney to Venkatesan for the sale.
Negotiations ensued, and Venkatesan, in the presence of an individual posing as Dileep Kumar, agreed to sell the land to Nandakumar for ₹92 lakh. The sale deed was executed and the property registered in Nandakumar’s name at the Sembium Sub-Registrar office in September 2022.
However, the following month, Nandakumar received notification from the Sub-Registrar office that the registration was being cancelled due to the fraudulent use of an impersonator and forged documents. He immediately filed a complaint with the police, alleging that he had been cheated of ₹92 lakh.
Following an investigation, Kolathur Police arrested Venkatesan, 54, of Thirunindravur; Kalilur Rahaman, 50, of West Ambattur; Sayid Salahuddin, 40, of Manali New Town; Abdul Razaq, 73, of Erukkanchery; and Abubucker, 51, of Kodungaiyur. They face charges related to fraud and forgery. The investigation is ongoing.
