Wed Sep 10 13:05:27 UTC 2025: **Nepal’s Army Takes Control Amidst Protests and Political Vacuum**
**Kathmandu, Nepal** – Following days of violent protests fueled by anger over corruption and the lavish lifestyles of “Nepo kids” (children of government officials), Nepal’s army has been deployed to restore order in the capital, Kathmandu, and other cities. The move comes after Prime Minister KP Oli resigned on Tuesday amidst escalating unrest that saw the parliament building set ablaze and the homes of politicians torched.
At least 19 people have died in clashes with security forces, further inflaming tensions. With Oli’s resignation, the country faces a political vacuum, and the army’s presence on the streets effectively puts them in charge, according to experts.
The protests, largely driven by Gen Z, began in response to government corruption and a social media ban that was later lifted. Demonstrators initially clashed with police before setting government buildings on fire, prompting the deployment of the Nepali army.
While the army’s official role is to restore security, their actions are coordinated by President Ram Chandra Poudel, who is seen by some as part of the establishment that protestors hope to eliminate. The president and army have called for talks with protestors to try to resolve the situation.
Youth protestors are currently discussing potential demands, which include the dissolution of parliament, new elections, and reforms to the electoral system. In the meantime, potential candidates for Prime Minister are already emerging, including Kathmandu Mayor Balendra “Balen” Shah, a rapper-turned-politician known for his anti-corruption stance.
