Melbourne, Australia – Malayalam actress Navya Nair recently learned firsthand about Australia’s strict biosecurity laws after being fined a hefty sum for bringing a jasmine garland into the country. Nair, who was invited to Melbourne to attend the Onam celebrations organized by the Victoria Malayali Association, was carrying a 15-centimeter “Gajra,” a traditional South Indian hair ornament made of jasmine flowers, when she was stopped at customs at Melbourne Airport.

Despite her explanations to customs officials that the garland was a common decorative item in India, authorities issued her a fine of approximately ₹1.14 Lakh (roughly 1980 Australian dollars).

Australia is known for its stringent biosecurity regulations aimed at protecting its unique ecosystem. The country prohibits the import of numerous items, including fresh and dried flowers, fruits, vegetables, dairy products, herbs, spices, raw nuts, seeds, honey, rice, tea and many more.

Travelers to Australia should be aware of the extensive list of prohibited items, which also includes items like food brought on planes or ships, feathers, bones, leather, pet food, traditional medicines made from plants or animals, radish and even cotton Rakhis. Certain clothing items like down jackets, sleeping bags, pillows, and duvets require special permits.

Violators of Australia’s biosecurity laws face stiff penalties, including confiscation and destruction of the prohibited items, fines up to AUD 2,664 per violation, and in severe cases, visa cancellation or imprisonment.
