**Tunis, Tunisia** – An international coalition of activists is preparing to challenge Israel’s blockade of Gaza with a flotilla carrying humanitarian aid and volunteers. The flotilla, composed of vessels from various countries, including Spain, Italy, and Tunisia, is expected to set sail on Sunday.
The “Global Sumud Flotilla” initiative comprises multiple organizing groups, including the Maghreb Sumud Flotilla based in Tunis. Volunteers in Tunis have been working tirelessly to collect and organize donations of medicine, infant milk, and messages of support from Tunisian children for their counterparts in Gaza.
The flotilla includes prominent figures like Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg. Participants include doctors, lawyers, convoy organizers, and social media influencers.
Organizers acknowledge the risks involved, citing previous instances where Israeli forces intercepted or attacked similar aid missions. On May 2, the ship Conscience was struck twice by Israeli armed drones when it was just 25 kilometres (16 miles) away from the shores of Malta.
“This is the largest aid flotilla to Gaza ever,” said Sahraoui, a volunteer. “No similar mission has been launched before. So we don’t really know how they’ll respond. I hope we do reach Gaza eventually.”
The organizers have kept specifics, like the number of boats, confidential.
The mission comes as Gaza faces a dire humanitarian crisis, including a declared famine, due to ongoing conflict and the blockade. Volunteers emphasize the urgent need to provide assistance and express solidarity with the Palestinian people.
