**Longhorns Gear Up for Home Opener Against San Jose State**
AUSTIN, TX – Fresh off a tough loss to Ohio State, the No. X ranked Texas Longhorns (1-0) return to Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium this Saturday to host the San Jose State Spartans (0-1) in their home opener. Kickoff is set for 11:00 AM CT.
Despite the defeat, optimism remains high for the Longhorns as they prepare for a three-game stretch against non-conference opponents before entering SEC play against Florida. Texas enters the contest as a heavy favorite, with FanDuel Sportsbook placing the spread at 36.5 points.
San Jose State Head Coach Ken Niumatalolo offered a lighthearted take on the challenge ahead, joking during a press conference that he had petitioned the NCAA to allow the Spartans to field 13 defensive players. “I haven’t heard back from the NCAA on the petition if we can play with 13 defenders to try and stop them,” he said.
Niumatalolo’s comments underscore the respect he has for the Longhorns’ offensive firepower. From quarterback Arch Manning to wide receivers Ryan Wingo and Quintrevion Wisner, Texas boasts a wealth of talent capable of a quick score. Niumatalolo went on to state this Longhorns squad could be one of the best he’s ever faced in his coaching career. “This is one of the best teams I’ve ever played,” Niumatalolo said.
The last meeting between these two teams in 2017 saw the Longhorns secure a dominant 56-0 victory, fueled by a strong performance from then-freshman quarterback Sam Ehlinger. Texas will be looking to replicate that success this weekend.
