**Stephen King Slams Superhero Movie Violence as “Pornographic,” Prefers Brutal Honesty in “The Long Walk” Adaptation**
Renowned horror author Stephen King has taken aim at Hollywood’s superhero genre, criticizing the often-bloodless depiction of mass destruction in Marvel and DC films. In a recent interview with The Times UK, King described the violence as “pornographic,” pointing to the destruction of entire cities with little to no on-screen consequences for human life.
“If you look at these superhero movies, you’ll see some supervillain who’s destroying whole city blocks but you never see any blood,” King said. “And man, that’s wrong. It’s almost, like, pornographic…”
King’s comments come ahead of the release of the film adaptation of his dystopian horror novel, “The Long Walk,” which he insists will offer a more realistic and brutal portrayal of violence. Speaking about the film, King stated, “I said [for ‘The Long Walk’], if you’re not going to show it, don’t bother. And so they made a pretty brutal movie.”
Directed by Francis Lawrence (“The Hunger Games”) and adapted by JT Mollner (“Strange Darling”), “The Long Walk” follows a group of teenage boys in a dystopian United States competing in a grueling contest where they must walk continuously at a certain speed or face deadly consequences. The film stars Cooper Hoffman, David Jonsson, Judy Greer, and Mark Hamill.
Hoffman recently told Variety that the demanding nature of the storyline forced the actors into intense physical exertion. “There are moments where you’re forced to be method actors,” Hoffman said. “Whatever ‘method’ means to people. But we are walking. No one is faking that. And it is exhausting.”
“The Long Walk” opens in theaters on September 12th, distributed by Lionsgate.
