Fri Sep 05 05:40:36 UTC 2025: ## News Article: Banerjee Promises Resolution to Teacher Recruitment Crisis, Sparks Controversy
**Kolkata, September 5, 2025:** West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s promises to resolve the ongoing teacher recruitment crisis have been met with mixed reactions, with groups representing “untainted” teachers expressing dismay over her remarks.
Speaking at a Teachers’ Day program in Kolkata, Banerjee stated that the government is exploring alternative roles for teachers deemed “tainted and ineligible” due to a recruitment scandal, potentially in Group C or D positions. She emphasized a “humanitarian” approach, assuring that non-teaching staff who lost their jobs following a Supreme Court ruling would also be considered in a new hiring process after the teacher recruitment is complete.
However, representatives of teachers who claim to be “untainted” by the scandal criticized the Chief Minister’s prioritization of those implicated in the irregularities. “The ‘untainted’ teachers and non-teaching staff… have been sacrificed in this whole scam,” said Mehboob Mondal of the Jogyo Shikkhok Shikkhika Adhikar Mancha (JSSAM). Mondal expressed concerns that qualified teachers from the 2016 recruitment may struggle to compete with fresh candidates in the upcoming exams.
The controversy stems from an April 3 Supreme Court ruling that upheld a Calcutta High Court order annulling nearly 26,000 teaching and non-teaching appointments, citing “fraud and irregularities” in the 2016 recruitment process. The entire panel was cancelled due to the inability to distinguish between “tainted” and “untainted” candidates.
Leader of the Opposition and BJP MLA Suvendu Adhikari met with protesting “untainted” teachers outside the Legislative Assembly, expressing his support and urging their reinstatement. He echoed concerns about the difficulty for those who passed the 2016 exams to compete with current applicants.
Meanwhile, the Supreme Court has dismissed appeals from “tainted” candidates seeking to participate in the fresh recruitment process, reinforcing their exclusion. The West Bengal School Service Commission (WBSSC) has published a list of 1,806 “tainted” candidates following a Supreme Court directive, and their admit cards have been cancelled.
The fresh recruitment examinations are scheduled for September 7 and 14, adding pressure to the already tense situation. The controversy highlights the complexities and challenges of addressing corruption and ensuring fairness in the West Bengal education system.
