**Judge Rules Trump Administration Illegally Cut $2.2 Billion in Research Grants to Harvard University**
**Boston, MA** – A federal judge has ruled that the Trump administration violated the First Amendment when it attempted to withhold over $2.2 billion in research grants from Harvard University. District Judge Allison Burroughs issued the ruling on Wednesday, stating that the administration’s actions were an “ideologically motivated assault” disguised as a response to concerns about anti-Semitism on campus.
The decision marks a significant victory for Harvard, which has been embroiled in a dispute with the Trump administration over its policies regarding pro-Palestine protests and diversity initiatives. The ruling vacates all freezes and terminations of funding to Harvard made on or after April 14, 2025.
The Trump administration had previously targeted several universities, including Columbia, for their role in antiwar protests following the start of the Israel-Gaza conflict in October 2023. Some universities, such as Columbia and Brown, reached agreements with the administration to restore funding, while the University of Virginia saw its president resign under the threat of a Department of Justice investigation.
Harvard, however, resisted the Trump administration’s demands, which included changes to its disciplinary practices, an audit of its student admissions, and the elimination of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs. University President Alan Garber argued that the demands infringed upon academic freedom.
Free speech advocacy group FIRE (Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression) praised the ruling, stating that the administration’s actions constituted an attempted “hostile takeover” that demanded “ideological litmus tests and restrictive speech codes.”
