**UMass Lowell Welcomes Class of 2029 with Convocation Ceremony, Promises Career-Connected Experiences**
LOWELL — UMass Lowell officially welcomed its newest class, the Class of 2029, at a convocation ceremony held Tuesday morning at the Tsongas Center. Over 3,300 incoming freshmen gathered to hear words of wisdom and encouragement as they prepare to embark on their college journey.
The ceremony featured speakers including UMass Lowell Student Government Association (SGA) President Gavin Robillard, who spoke about his experience as a first-generation college student and the responsibility of being a role model. “You never know who is watching…You might inspire someone to do something new, or to do more than they thought they could,” he said.
UMass Lowell Chancellor Julie Chen emphasized the unique journey of each student and highlighted the university’s commitment to “career-connected experiences.” She pledged that every student in the Class of 2029 would be guaranteed a paid or credited career experience before graduation.
Keynote speaker William Lefebvre, a 2024 UML graduate and environmental scientist, shared his experiences representing the university at the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Dubai. He acknowledged the challenges facing the world but emphasized the opportunities that UMass Lowell provides, stating, “UMass Lowell gave me the tools, the network, and the confidence to step into spaces I never thought I’d be in. And the same opportunities are waiting for you.”
Following the ceremony, students attended the UML Engagement Fair, where they were introduced to over 250 extracurricular clubs and intramural sports teams, offering opportunities for involvement and connection on campus.
