Thu Sep 04 12:59:12 UTC 2025: **Ukraine Strikes Deep, Crippling Russian Oil Refineries and Intensifying Conflict**

**Kyiv, Ukraine** – Ukraine has significantly escalated its attacks on Russian oil infrastructure, reportedly cutting Russia’s refining capacity by up to 21% in recent weeks. These deep strikes, utilizing drones and potentially new long-range cruise missiles, aim to cripple Russia’s energy sector and reduce its export revenue, a crucial source of funding for the ongoing war.

The attacks on refineries have led to petrol shortages within Russia, prompting Moscow to extend an export ban on petroleum products until the end of October in an attempt to stabilize the domestic market. Reports indicate that Russia is being forced to heavily discount its crude oil to retain customers, further impacting its revenue stream.

In retaliation, Russia has intensified its attacks on Ukrainian cities, including a deadly barrage on Kyiv that resulted in numerous civilian casualties. Despite these attacks, Ukraine claims a high interception rate for incoming drones and missiles.

On the ground, Russia has redeployed elite units from the Sumy region to the Donetsk region, possibly signaling a renewed push towards the city of Pokrovsk, a strategic objective for Moscow. However, Ukrainian forces have so far successfully defended against Russian advances, particularly near Dobropillia, halting an attempt to encircle Pokrovsk from the north. Intense fighting continues around Lyman and Pokrovsk, key areas within Ukraine’s heavily fortified defensive lines.

While Russia claims to have made significant territorial gains, independent analysts dispute these assertions, estimating a smaller area captured than Moscow claims. Similarly, Ukrainian officials have refuted Russian claims of capturing territory near Kupiansk.

In the Black Sea, Russia achieved a rare success by reportedly sinking a Ukrainian reconnaissance ship, potentially mirroring Ukraine’s successful use of naval drones to target Russian vessels earlier in the conflict.

Internationally, Ukraine’s allies are working on security guarantees in the event of a ceasefire and urging the US to impose sanctions to encourage direct negotiations between Putin and Kyiv. Russia, meanwhile, continues to highlight its energy exports to China and India.
