Thu Sep 04 02:26:00 UTC 2025: **Summary:**

Coimbatore Corporation is planning to build a sewage treatment plant (STP) to address the issue of untreated sewage flowing through a natural drain that passes through Coimbatore International Airport. Sewage mixing into the channel, along with plastic and solid waste, is blocking the flow of water and causing foul odors in the airport and surrounding areas. The existing STP that previously treated sewage from nearby areas is no longer functioning due to land acquisition for airport expansion, leading to sewage stagnation in open areas. The Corporation is seeking funding support from airport authorities through CSR to establish a 2 MLD capacity STP and is also planning a separate STP to handle underground drainage from the affected areas.

**Coimbatore Airport to Get Sewage Treatment Plant After Years of Odor Complaints**

**Coimbatore, September 4, 2025** – Coimbatore Corporation is moving forward with plans to construct a sewage treatment plant (STP) to address the persistent issue of untreated wastewater polluting a natural drain that runs through Coimbatore International Airport. For years, the untreated sewage has been causing foul odors and accumulating debris, impacting the airport and neighboring residential areas.

The plan involves constructing a new STP on approximately 29 cents of land near the airport. Airport officials have already inspected the proposed site. The current situation sees a channel, originally designed as a natural drain, being choked with sewage, plastic, and solid waste that accumulates on iron grills meant to regulate water flow. This blockage is letting only polluted water to flow eastward, exacerbating the issue in Kurumbapalayam and ultimately discharging into Kolathur tank.

“The plant will ensure that only treated water flows out of the airport channel,” stated Corporation Commissioner M. Sivaguru Prabakaran.

The move follows the closure of a previous STP, which served Poonga Nagar, Brindhavan Nagar, and surrounding areas, after its land was acquired for airport expansion. This closure has resulted in raw sewage stagnating in the open.

The Corporation is currently in discussions with airport authorities to secure funding for the project through corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives. The proposed STP will have a capacity of 2 MLD (million liters per day). In addition, a separate STP project, costing ₹4.6 crore, is planned for Ward 23 to specifically handle underground drainage from Poonga Nagar, Brindhavan Nagar, and the surrounding areas. Funds for this project have been allocated by the land acquisition authority, and tenders are expected to be floated soon.

Ward 23 Councillor K. Manian emphasized the urgency of the situation, highlighting the long-standing complaints from residents.

The construction of the STP is expected to significantly improve the environmental conditions around Coimbatore International Airport and its neighboring communities, addressing the long-standing problem of sewage pollution and unpleasant odors.
