Wed Sep 03 18:52:14 UTC 2025: ## Bolsonaro’s Lawyers Claim Unfair Trial as Coup Case Nears Verdict
**Brasilia, Brazil** – As the coup trial of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro nears its conclusion, his defense team has launched a final push to secure an acquittal, arguing that their client was denied a fair hearing and that the case is politically motivated.
In closing arguments before Brazil’s Supreme Court on Wednesday, Bolsonaro’s lawyers asserted that the prosecution had failed to present sufficient evidence to link the former president to the alleged plot to overturn the 2022 election, which saw Bolsonaro narrowly defeated by current President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.
“We did not have access to the evidence, and much less had enough time to go through it,” lawyer Celso Vilardi told the court, arguing that the trial had been rushed for political reasons.
Bolsonaro faces five charges, including attempting a coup, seeking to end the democratic rule of law, and participating in an armed criminal organization, related to his alleged efforts to remain in power after losing the election. Prosecutors claim Bolsonaro and his allies planned to declare a “state of siege” and prompt military intervention.
The trial has become a highly charged international spectacle. Bolsonaro’s supporters view the case as an attempt to silence right-wing voices, and have even prompted intervention from former U.S. President Donald Trump, who has imposed tariffs on Brazilian exports in protest.
Bolsonaro’s defense team has sought to cast doubt on the prosecution’s case, questioning a plea deal with a co-defendant and suggesting the trial was expedited to influence the 2026 general election. They have also accused the Supreme Court of bias, citing the past affiliations of two justices with President Lula.
Outside the court, Bolsonaro’s son, Senator Flavio Bolsonaro, has indicated he is seeking to pass an amnesty law that would protect his father and those involved in the January 8, 2023, riots in Brasilia, where Bolsonaro supporters stormed government buildings.
The Supreme Court has dismissed allegations of bias and affirmed its independence. Justice Alexandre de Moraes stated the court would not be swayed by external pressure.
Bolsonaro faces up to 43 years in prison if convicted. The verdict is expected in the coming days and is seen by many as a crucial test of Brazil’s democracy.
