**New Delhi, India – September 5, 2024** – With September now underway, the Income Tax Department is reminding taxpayers that the extended deadline for filing Income Tax Returns (ITR) for the financial year 2024-25 (assessment year 2025-26) is rapidly approaching.

While the original deadline was July 31, 2025, the department granted an extension, setting the **final date for filing as September 15, 2025.** Tax professionals are urging individuals to utilize the remaining time to ensure accurate and timely submissions, as a further extension is considered unlikely.

Missing the September 15th deadline will result in penalties and interest charges. Taxpayers who file a belated return can do so by December 31, 2025, but will be subject to interest at a rate of 1% per month or part month on the outstanding tax amount, as per Section 234A.

Furthermore, a late fee will be levied under Section 234F. Individuals with a total income exceeding Rs. 5 lakh will be charged Rs. 5,000, while those with an income below Rs. 5 lakh will be charged Rs. 1,000.
