**Washington D.C.** – A prominent Indian-American Congressman, Ro Khanna, has launched a scathing attack on President Donald Trump, accusing him of jeopardizing decades of bipartisan efforts to strengthen the strategic partnership between the United States and India. Khanna alleges that Trump’s recent imposition of steep tariffs on Indian goods is driven by resentment that India did not nominate him for the Nobel Peace Prize, while Pakistan did.
Khanna, co-chair of the US-India caucus, stated that Trump is “destroying 30 years of bipartisan work” and that the tariffs levied on India, including a 25% tariff on Russian oil imports, are “higher… than Brazil and China.” He suggested the President’s actions are fueled by bruised ego rather than genuine trade concerns.
The Congressman expressed concern that the tariffs are negatively impacting Indian exports of leather and textiles, as well as harming American manufacturers who export to India. He echoed the worries of former diplomats who believe Trump’s policies are pushing India towards closer ties with China and Russia, a concern amplified by recent meetings between Prime Minister Narendra Modi, China’s Xi Jinping, and Russia’s Vladimir Putin at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit.
Khanna framed the situation as a “five-alarm fire” and called on Indian Americans who voted for Trump to speak out against what he sees as the destruction of a crucial strategic alliance. He shared a post by businessman Vinod Khosla who wrote that Trump winning the Nobel Peace Prize would desecrate the award.
The Congressman’s comments come amid widely reported speculation that Trump’s actions are motivated by perceived slights regarding the Nobel Peace Prize, despite the President’s claims that the tariffs are aimed at addressing unfair trade practices. Khanna argues that “the US can’t allow Trump’s ego to destroy the relationship with India” adding that it is “key to ensuring that America leads and not China.”
