Wed Sep 03 11:06:10 UTC 2025: ## Trump Announces US Space Command HQ Moving to Alabama, Reversing Biden’s Decision
**Washington D.C.** – In a controversial move, former President Donald Trump announced Tuesday that the U.S. Space Command headquarters will be relocated from its current location in Colorado Springs, Colorado, to Huntsville, Alabama. Trump, flanked by Alabama Republicans, stated that Huntsville was his original choice and that the Biden administration had “wrongfully obstructed” the move. He further dubbed Huntsville “Rocket City,” citing its historical role in the U.S. space program.
The decision reverses a 2023 decision by President Joe Biden to keep Space Command in Colorado, arguing it would maintain readiness amidst growing competition from China and Russia in space. The move will see approximately 1,700 personnel transferred to the U.S. Army’s Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville.
Trump, while praising Alabama, also criticized Colorado’s mail-in voting system, claiming it leads to “crooked elections.” He insisted, however, that his support for Alabama did not influence his decision.
The selection process for the Space Command headquarters has been fraught with controversy. While the Air Force initially favored Huntsville in 2021, the Government Accountability Office raised concerns about the selection process. Supporters of Colorado argue that the state is a more suitable location due to its existing space infrastructure, including the U.S. Air Force Academy and multiple Space Force bases.
Alabama representatives, including Congressman Dale Strong, disputed claims of lengthy construction delays in Alabama, stating it would take only 14-18 months.
While the Pentagon inspector general has acknowledged potential risks to readiness, it also estimated cost savings of $426 million by moving to Huntsville.
Colorado’s congressional delegation, including Republicans, released a joint statement condemning the decision, warning that it would set back U.S. space defense efforts, waste taxpayer money, and hand an advantage to rival nations. Alabama leaders, however, celebrated the announcement, with Senator Tommy Tuberville stating the move puts “our nation’s security first.” Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth called it an important move to stay “leaps and bounds” ahead in the space domain.
The relocation is expected to be a complex undertaking with significant implications for the future of U.S. space operations and national security.
