Wed Sep 03 05:30:00 UTC 2025: **GST Council Meeting Underway, Rate Cuts and Slab Revisions on the Table**
**New Delhi, September 3rd, 2023** – The 56th GST Council meeting commenced today in New Delhi, with key decisions regarding GST slab revisions and potential rate cuts expected to be made. These changes could significantly impact the prices of various goods and services across the country.
A primary focus of the meeting is the potential overhaul of the GST tax slab structure. Reports suggest that some goods may become cheaper due to tax exemptions, while others could see price increases. According to the Ambit Capital Report GST 2.0, essential food items such as paneer, pizza bread, khakhra, chapati, and roti are likely to remain untaxed or be taxed at a low rate of 5%. Similarly, stationery, medical equipment, and medicines are also expected to be subject to minimal or no tax.
Conversely, goods deemed harmful, such as alcohol and luxury items, may face increased GST rates. The tax structure for petroleum products, gold, and diamonds is expected to remain unchanged.
While the exact changes are yet to be confirmed by the government, the proposed GST reforms could lead to a revenue loss of 0.7-1.8 trillion for the central and state governments, according to the Ambit Capital Report GST 2.0.
The GST Council meeting is scheduled to continue from September 3rd to September 5th.
