**Beijing, China** – Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin met in Beijing Tuesday, reaffirming their strong partnership and signaling defiance to Western powers amid escalating global tensions. The meeting, held a day before a major military parade commemorating Japan’s surrender in World War II, saw both leaders emphasize their deep friendship and the “unprecedented level” of relations between their countries.

“Dear friend,” Putin addressed Xi, echoing Xi’s earlier characterization of him as an “old friend.” The leaders’ discussion followed their participation in the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Tianjin, where both nations promoted the SCO as a counterbalance to Western influence. Putin argued for a new global system to replace “outdated Eurocentric and Euro-Atlantic models.”

The strengthened ties come amidst heightened tensions with the United States, fueled by the war in Ukraine and trade disputes. China, while claiming neutrality in the Ukraine conflict, has provided crucial economic support to Russia, with some Chinese companies facing accusations of aiding the Russian military.

The military parade on Wednesday, marking the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II, will feature a number of world leaders, including North Korea’s Kim Jong Un and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, showcasing a display of strength and unity in the face of what some perceive as Western pressure.

“Many of the leaders attending this parade have been styled by the US… as outcasts, as weak, as pariahs,” reported Al Jazeera’s Katrina Yu. “The point China hopes to make by rolling out the red carpet for them is to show ‘they’re not isolated, that they do have friends and they do have power.'”

Prior to their bilateral talks, Xi and Putin also held a trilateral meeting with Mongolian President Khurelsukh Ukhnaa, emphasizing the need for closer cooperation between the three nations in the face of global instability. The day before, Xi Jinping critiqued the US at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit, declaring that “Global governance has reached a new crossroads.”

Analysts suggest that the meetings and the upcoming military parade are designed to send a clear message of solidarity and strength, signaling a challenge to the existing global order and highlighting the growing influence of China and Russia on the world stage.
