**Tripura Minister Accuses Media, Own Party, of Obstructing Panchayat Work**
Agartala, Tripura – September 2, 2025 – Tripura’s Higher Education and Panchayat Minister, Kishor Barman, has ignited controversy by publicly stating that the news media, alongside opposition parties and internal factions within the ruling BJP, are significant impediments to the effective functioning of Panchayat representatives.
Barman made the remarks during the inauguration of a two-day Panchayati Raj Capacity Building Programme held at the State Panchayat Resource Centre in A.D Nagar on Monday. The event, attended by Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha and numerous elected Panchayat representatives, aimed to enhance the capabilities of the local governing bodies.
“Please keep in mind that you (Panchayat level representatives) all have enemies,” Barman stated. “These enemies can come from Opposition parties, our own party (BJP) and even from the news media.”
In his address, the Minister, who assumed his cabinet position in July, also took aim at the previous CPI(M)-led left front government, accusing them of widespread financial corruption within the Panchayats and subsequently depriving the public of essential benefits.
Barman emphasized the importance of Panchayat representatives fulfilling their duties for the welfare of the people and further urged them to dedicate time to the BJP’s organizational activities, in addition to their regular work.
The Minister’s accusations have drawn sharp criticism from various quarters, with media organizations and opposition parties condemning his remarks as an attack on freedom of the press and an attempt to stifle dissent. The incident raises questions about the relationship between the government, the media, and local governance in Tripura.
