**Aggies Surge Past UTSA in Season Opener, Reed Throws for Four Touchdowns**
COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The No. 19 Texas A&M Aggies kicked off their season with a decisive 42-24 victory over the UTSA Roadrunners Saturday night, fueled by a career-high four touchdown passes from quarterback Marcel Reed and a dynamic debut from transfer KC Concepcion.
Reed, showcasing significant improvement, threw for 289 yards, connecting twice with another transfer, Mario Craver (from Mississippi State), who hauled in 122 receiving yards. Concepcion, arriving from N.C. State, electrified the crowd with an 80-yard punt return touchdown in the first quarter and a 31-yard touchdown reception in the second.
UTSA’s Robert Henry Jr. provided a spark for the Roadrunners, rushing for 177 yards and two touchdowns, including a 75-yard scamper to open the second half. But UTSA’s resurgence was short-lived. Reed responded with a 1-yard touchdown pass on fourth down followed by a 22-yard scoring throw, extending A&M’s lead to 35-17 by the end of the third quarter.
“We wanted to get more explosive on offense, we did. We wanted to get more explosive in the return game, we did,” said Aggies coach Mike Elko, praising the impact of newcomers Concepcion and Craver.
EJ Smith, son of NFL Hall of Famer Emmitt Smith, added his first touchdown for the Aggies with a 3-yard run in the fourth quarter, sealing the victory.
While the Aggies’ passing game flourished, their ground attack struggled to gain traction, finishing with just 108 rushing yards.
UTSA coach Jeff Traylor acknowledged his team’s effort but admitted, “We played about as good as we could have honestly. We just couldn’t last with them.”
UTSA will look to rebound next Saturday as they host Texas State. Texas A&M will host Utah State next Saturday.
