Tue Sep 02 08:25:21 UTC 2025: ## Ukraine’s Allies Vie for Trump’s Favor Amidst Geopolitical Shift

**Kyiv, Ukraine** – As Ukraine navigates a complex geopolitical landscape, its European allies are scrambling to secure commitments for a peacekeeping force and tougher sanctions against Russia, while simultaneously attempting to keep US President Donald Trump “on side,” experts say.

Following a summit with President Trump on August 18th, European allies have been working to finalize contributions to a potential peacekeeping force that would deploy in Ukraine after a ceasefire is reached. Estonia and Lithuania have already pledged military units, while Romania has offered its airfields for enforcing a no-fly zone. Turkey is also considering troop deployment and assistance with de-mining efforts in the Black Sea.

However, the US appears to be on a different track. While President Trump has vaguely expressed support for US involvement, he has ruled out troop deployment. Instead, the US might contribute “strategic enablers” like intelligence and air defense assets.

Experts suggest that European leaders, including Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, are cautiously navigating Trump’s unpredictable stance. They are reportedly humoring Trump’s focus on a ceasefire, despite its unachievability and undesirability in the eyes of Ukraine and its allies.

Ukraine and its European partners are pushing for stronger sanctions against Russia and seek “Article 5-like guarantees” for Ukraine’s security, potentially drawing NATO forces into a conflict with Russia.

However, Trump’s position remains unclear. While political pressure might prevent him from fully aligning with Russia, reports suggest that potential economic deals were discussed with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska on August 15th, including energy projects and the easing of sanctions.

In exchange for US security guarantees, Ukraine has reportedly offered to buy $100 billion worth of US weapons, financed by Europe. However, the scale and fulfillment of these commitments remain uncertain.

Meanwhile, Russia is sending signals that it is not interested in serious negotiations. Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has stated that a meeting between Putin and Zelenskyy is not planned and that the agenda is not ready. Russia continues to insist on principles such as Ukraine’s non-membership in NATO and discussions on territorial issues.

Trump has given himself a two-week deadline to decide on sanctions against Russia, but remains torn between European and Russian interests.
