**Muchova Rattled by Ex-Boyfriend’s Presence at U.S. Open, Still Manages to Rally for Victory**
**NEW YORK** – Czech tennis star Karolina Muchova overcame more than just her opponent, Sorana Cîrstea, in the second round of the U.S. Open on Thursday. Muchova revealed that she was momentarily distracted and emotionally affected by the presence of her ex-boyfriend in the crowd.
The incident occurred when Muchova was down 4-1 in the second set. According to Muchova, her ex-boyfriend “showed up at places where he shouldn’t be,” causing her to lose focus. She stated that she asked him to leave, which he eventually did.
“Well… it wasn’t tennis-related,” Muchova told reporters after the match, via *The Athletic*. “So l don’t really like talking about it. But opposite my bench, my ex-boyfriend sat down. He sometimes shows up at places where he shouldn’t be. That startled me a bit. I told him to leave, he didn’t, but later he did go. It was hard to focus in that moment.”
Despite the distraction, Muchova rallied to defeat Cîrstea in three sets and advanced further into the tournament. She has not reported the incident to the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) or the United States Tennis Association (USTA).
The USTA released a statement regarding player safety, saying, “Player safety is a critical element of our planning and execution for the U.S. Open…Our comprehensive security plan includes protocols and procedures for effective risk mitigation and issue management.” The statement further emphasized the USTA’s constant communication with local and federal law enforcement, as well as collaboration with the ATP, WTA, ITF, and ITIA.
Tennis players have the option to request certain spectators be blacklisted from purchasing tickets or receiving credentials. An alleged stalker of Emma Raducanu appeared at the Dubai Tennis Championships in February, and the man was blacklisted from purchasing tickets for Wimbledon.
Muchova, currently ranked No. 13, has reached the semifinals of the U.S. Open in the past. She has since advanced to the round of 16.
