**Belgium to Recognize Palestinian State at UN, Impose Sanctions on Israel**
**Brussels, Belgium** – In a significant move, Belgium has announced its intention to recognize the State of Palestine at the upcoming United Nations General Assembly session later this month. Foreign Minister Maxime Prevot made the announcement via social media on Tuesday, citing the “humanitarian tragedy unfolding in Palestine, particularly in Gaza.”
In addition to recognizing Palestinian statehood, Belgium will also impose 12 “firm sanctions” on Israel, including a ban on importing products from Israeli settlements and a review of public procurement policies with Israeli companies.
“Palestine will be recognised by Belgium at the UN session! And firm sanctions will be imposed against the Israeli government,” Minister Prevot stated on X.
Belgium’s decision comes amid increasing international scrutiny of Israel’s actions in Gaza, where the ongoing conflict has resulted in a devastating toll. According to reports, at least 63,459 people have been killed and 160,256 wounded.
Belgium’s decision follows a similar announcement by France, with President Emmanuel Macron stating in July that France would also recognize the State of Palestine at the UN General Assembly. As of April of this year, 147 countries, representing 75% of UN members, already recognized Palestinian statehood.
This action also follows an investigation of Israeli soldiers by Belgian prosecutors referred a war crimes complaint against two Israeli soldiers to the International Criminal Court (ICC), following allegations that they participated in atrocities in Gaza.
This is a developing story, and further updates will be provided as they become available.
