**India’s Top Court Upholds E20 Mandate Amid Concerns Over Vehicle Compatibility**
**NEW DELHI, September 1, 2025** – The Supreme Court of India today dismissed a petition challenging the nationwide rollout of E20 petrol, a fuel blend containing 20% ethanol. The decision effectively mandates the use of E20 across the country, even for older vehicles not specifically designed to run on it.
The petition argued that forcing motorists to use E20 without providing ethanol-free alternatives violated their fundamental rights, particularly for owners of pre-April 2023 vehicles. Advocate Shadan Farasat, representing the petitioners, cited a NITI Aayog report indicating a potential 6-7% reduction in fuel efficiency for four-wheelers and 3-4% for two-wheelers when using E20. The petition also highlighted concerns about corrosion and premature wear and tear on engine parts in non-compliant vehicles, citing manufacturer advisories. Furthermore, they cited the lack of proper labeling and public awareness of ethanol content in the fuel and said it was a breach of right to informed consumer choice.
The Union government, represented by Attorney-General R. Venkataramani, defended the E20 policy, stating that it benefits sugarcane farmers, reduces dependence on foreign oil imports, and serves national interests. He further questioned the petitioner’s motives, implying foreign influence.
The court’s dismissal means that nearly all of India’s 90,000 fuel stations will continue to exclusively offer ethanol-blended fuel. This decision, while aimed at boosting the agricultural sector and conserving foreign exchange, raises concerns about the impact on vehicle owners with older, non-compliant models, as they may face potential damage without insurance coverage. The lack of labeling for the consumer about the ethanol content also poses a challenge to informed consumer choice, argued the petition.
