**Chennai to Tackle Waste Crisis with Innovative New Facility**

**Chennai, India – August 30, 2025** – The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) is embarking on a transformative initiative to address the city’s mounting waste management challenges. A new ₹350 crore integrated waste processing facility is set to be established at the Perungudi dumpyard, aiming to significantly reduce the volume of fresh waste entering the site daily.

Currently, the Perungudi dumpyard receives between 2,700 and 3,000 tonnes of fresh municipal solid waste each day. The new facility, slated to be operational within three months of the work order issuance, will process 400 metric tonnes per day using a multi-faceted approach.

The pilot project includes:

* **Mechanical Segregation:** Separating mixed municipal solid waste into wet and dry fractions.
* **Windrow Composting:** Converting wet waste into compost.
* **Biogas Production:** Supplying wet waste to biogas plants.
* **Black Soldier Fly Larvae Treatment:** Utilizing larvae to convert wet waste into protein-rich feed and organic manure.
* **Recycling:** Separating dry waste into recyclables and converting the remaining into refuse-derived fuel.

The GCC will provide approximately eight acres of land and the necessary electricity components, while the operator will be responsible for workforce, vehicles, machinery installation, and facility construction. The operator must dispose of all recovered materials, including compost and recyclables, within 12-16 weeks of production, with a maximum of only 7% of rejected materials permitted to be returned to the dumpyard.

Leachate generated during the process will be collected and transported to a treatment plant for safe disposal, adhering to Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016, and Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board norms.

This ambitious project signals a strong commitment from the GCC to adopt modern and sustainable waste management practices, promising a cleaner and healthier future for Chennai.
