A staggering 43.33 lakh metric tonnes of waste have been cleared from the city’s two largest dump yards, Perungudi and Kodungaiyur, successfully reclaiming nearly 100 acres of land previously buried under garbage.

The massive cleanup operation utilizes biomining techniques. The Perungudi site, covering 250 acres, held 27.50 lakh tonnes of waste. To date, 25.30 lakh metric tonnes have been removed, freeing up 94.29 acres. The GCC anticipates completing the Perungudi project by the end of the year. This initiative began in 2022 with six packages worth ₹350.65 crore.

Work at Kodungaiyur, covering 342.91 acres and containing 66.52 lakh tonnes of waste, commenced in 2024. Works worth ₹641 crore are currently underway. So far, 18.03 lakh metric tonnes have been removed, reclaiming three acres.
