**New Vehicular Subway to Improve Safety on Chennai-Bengaluru Highway Near Ranipet**
**RANIPET, August 31, 2025** – A new vehicular subway on the Chennai-Bengaluru Highway (NH 48) near the Christian Medical College (CMC) at Puttuthakku village in Ranipet is slated for completion by December, according to the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). The ₹22-crore project aims to mitigate accidents at one of the highway’s designated “black spots” – accident-prone locations identified by police reports.
The subway will be located near the new CMC campus in Puttuthakku, a location that sees an average of one lakh visitors daily, including those traveling from the main CMC campus in Vellore. Currently, pedestrians must walk at least 500 meters to the nearest crossing. Additionally, the 15 km stretch between CMC and the Vellore Collectorate lacks U-turn facilities for larger vehicles like lorries, trucks, and buses.
“Sand filling on the elevated portion and levelling of the carriageway are currently underway,” stated an NHAI official. “We anticipate the entire work will be completed by year end.”
The new underpass, measuring 4.5 meters in height and 20 meters in width, will also reduce the number of existing U-turn spots along the stretch. According to NHAI norms, underpasses should be spaced approximately 1.5 kilometers apart at key intersections and crowded locations. The Krishnagiri-Walajapet section of the highway, spanning 148 km, already has 17 such underpasses.
This project will hopefully improve road safety near government schools, primary healthcare centers, and car service centers in the area.
