**Modi and Xi Meet Amid Global Tariff Turmoil, Analysts See Message to US**
**Tianjin, China** – Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Tianjin today, a meeting framed by analysts as a deliberate signal to the United States amid escalating global trade tensions. The US has levied hefty tariffs on India, prompting speculation that the move is retaliation for India’s independent stance on trade policies and its refusal to condemn Russia’s oil sales.
Speaking on NDTV, Einar Tangen of the Taihe Institute suggested the tariffs are an attempt to force India’s submission, and that India has an opportunity to stand up to this “bully.” He criticized the US’s broad use of tariffs, affecting nations worldwide.
During the meeting, PM Modi expressed India’s commitment to strengthening ties with China based on “mutual trust and respect.” Tangen highlighted the meeting as a message to Washington regarding its “arbitrary actions” towards India. He further suggested the US fears India’s leadership within the non-aligned movement and its potential to unite nations against what he described as “colonial games.”
The meeting signals a potential strengthening of ties between India and China, especially in light of military disengagement near Galwan in 2020. While rebuilding trust will take time, Tangen foresees progress on the economic front, citing potential cooperation in areas like rare earths and fertilizers.
