Marc Maron has intensified his criticism of Bill Maher, accusing the HBO host of a “desperate chasing of relevance” and questioning his willingness to compromise integrity to stay in the spotlight. The comments came during an appearance on “Pod Save America,” where Maron reiterated his frustration with Maher’s recent takes, particularly his apparent agreement with some of Donald Trump’s policies.
“I always had a problem with his tone,” Maron stated, suggesting that Maher’s pursuit of relevancy has led to a compromised approach. “I can’t see past the desperation and what he’s willing to do to stay in the conversation.”
This isn’t the first time Maron has publicly called out Maher. Earlier this year, he labeled Maher a “bitch” for seemingly agreeing with some of Trump’s actions.
Beyond Maher, Maron also took aim at Netflix, accusing the streaming giant of prioritizing profit over principles and even using the term “Reichflix” to suggest a dangerous path. He cited Netflix’s continued partnership with Dave Chappelle, despite the comedian’s controversial anti-trans jokes, as a turning point. Maron argued that Netflix realized the trans community’s pushback wouldn’t impact their bottom line and, therefore, disregarded their concerns. He sees this as a manifestation of “how fascism works in business.”
While acknowledging Netflix’s LGBTQ+ content, Maron argued that the platform ultimately prioritizes shows and deals that align with its profit-driven agenda. He suggests that the company only throws the LGBTQ+ community a “bone”, and doesn’t truly care about their concerns.
