**Chennai Residents Gain New Subway, Flood Mitigation Efforts Underway**

**CHENNAI, INDIA – August 21, 2025** – Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin officially opened a new vehicle subway in Bojaraja Nagar, Royapuram zone, on Monday, August 18, 2025. The ₹30.13 crore project is expected to significantly improve transportation for approximately one lakh residents in Bojaraja Nagar, Srinivasan Nagar, and Mint.

The new subway, constructed using funds from the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC), addresses a long-standing need in the area. Previously, residents faced significant challenges getting in and out of Bojaraja Nagar, as it is surrounded on three sides by railway tracks. The 207-meter-long subway, including a 37-meter railway section and a 6-meter width, will alleviate these transportation difficulties, particularly during emergencies. To combat potential monsoon flooding, the subway is equipped with a water collection well, 85HP motor pumps, and a generator.

Alongside the subway opening, a new children’s play area, a roundabout park, a pedestrian walkway around the roundabout, and a public rest area were inaugurated, costing ₹1.41 crore.

Deputy Chief Minister Stalin also reviewed ongoing flood-prevention projects across Chennai. These include the construction of the Keelkattalai Lake surplus water drain, rehabilitation of surplus water channels, and construction of a retaining wall at the Sembakkam Bridge, with a total investment of ₹59.12 crore. Flood-prevention work is also underway at Narayanapuram Lake in Perungudi Zone, including the construction of a concrete covered drain and surplus channel costing ₹44 crore. He also inspected flood-mitigation work worth ₹91 crore at the Pallikaranai marshland, desilting and deepening work at the Okkiyam Madavu for ₹27 crore. He directed officials to ensure timely completion of all projects.

Municipal Administration and Water Supply Minister K.N. Nehru, Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Minister P.K. Sekarbabu, Chennai Mayor R. Priya, elected representatives, and officials were present at the event.
