Wed Aug 20 23:30:00 UTC 2025: ## Chennai Subway Project Nears Completion After Years of Delays

**Chennai, August 21, 2025:** After over a decade of delays, the Radha Nagar subway project near Chromepet railway station in Chennai is finally nearing completion. The project, intended to replace the heavily congested level crossing gate no: 27, promises to significantly ease traffic flow in the area.

The breakthrough came after intervention from Pallavaram MLA E. Karunanidhi, who secured an agreement from the Southern Railway to cede a portion of land adjacent to the platform. This land will facilitate access roads connecting the subway to the GST Road, a crucial link that has been holding up the project.

“This subway has been delayed for far too long,” commented social activist Santhanam. “Once completed, it will prevent vehicles from having to take long detours or wait at the level crossing.”

A senior official from the Chennai division of Southern Railway confirmed the land allocation, stating that it is critical for creating the necessary access facilities. Current plans involve relocating the bus stand outside the railway station and implementing new traffic management strategies to optimize traffic flow upon the subway’s opening.

According to sources within the Highways Department, construction of the sump room is underway and tenders have been issued for the procurement of necessary pumps and generators. “We are waiting for favorable weather conditions to lay the bituminous layer on the approach roads and complete the painting,” a source explained. “We expect the work to be completed within approximately one month.”

The Radha Nagar subway runs parallel to Rajendra Prasad Road in Hasthinapuram, connecting residents across several streets in Chromepet. For residents like S. Rangaraj, who has witnessed the project’s prolonged delay since its initiation in 2010, the imminent completion is welcome news. “This subway is a long-awaited development that will greatly benefit motorists in the area,” he said.
