Mon Aug 18 13:08:07 UTC 2025: ## Tiruchi MP Urges Centre to Establish Inland Container Depot

**TIRUCHIRAPPALLI, August 18, 2025** – Durai Vaiko, Member of Parliament for Tiruchi, has appealed to the central government to approve the establishment of an inland container depot (ICD) in Tiruchi, Tamil Nadu. Citing the growing export volume from the region, Vaiko argues that the ICD would significantly benefit the trade and industry sectors by reducing transportation costs and streamlining export processes.

Vaiko met with Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal in New Delhi on Monday to advocate for the project. In his representation, he emphasized Tiruchi’s importance as an export hub for a diverse range of goods, including engineering equipment, food products, millets, and fresh produce like fruits and vegetables. Data indicates substantial agricultural production, with Tiruchi generating 112.62 million tonnes of fruits and 204.96 million tonnes of vegetables in 2023-2024.

Currently, approximately 40 to 50 containers of goods are transported by road monthly from Tiruchi to distant seaports in Chennai, Thoothukudi, and Kochi for export to countries like Singapore, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates. Exporters face high costs and lengthy formalities. An ICD would allow for on-site documentation and procedures, significantly reducing both expense and time.

Vaiko pointed out the consistent growth of export volumes from Tiruchi and highlighted the potential of a dry port to attract investments and support sustained export growth. He suggested the SIPCOT Industrial Park near Manapparai, or other locations with highway access, as suitable sites for the 100-acre facility.

The establishment of an ICD in Tiruchi is expected to not only boost the regional economy but also contribute to the nation’s overall export performance.
