**SIT Expands Investigation into Alleged Burials in Dharmasthala, India**

**MANGALURU, August 6, 2025** – The Special Investigation Team (SIT) currently probing allegations of illegal burials in Dharmasthala village has been ordered to broaden its scope, adding an investigation into claims of police misconduct related to a possible cover up.

Director-General and Inspector-General of Police M.A. Saleem has instructed the SIT to investigate a complaint filed by T. Jayant, who alleges that police in Dharmasthala improperly handled the discovery and burial of a 15-year-old girl’s body between 2002 and 2003. According to the complaint, the body was found by the roadside, and police buried it without registering a case, conducting a mandatory post-mortem examination, or notifying family members. An official allegedly told local people it was the body of a 40 year old that commited suicide.

“The SIT will now examine the circumstances surrounding this alleged incident from over two decades ago,” stated a police source. “We are committed to uncovering the truth and holding anyone accountable for wrongdoing.”

In addition to the new complaint, Mr. Saleem has also transferred to the SIT a case involving skeletal remains discovered at burial site number 6 during exhumation efforts on July 31st.

The exhumation process, which began on July 29th based on information provided by a former sanitation worker, has yielded mixed results. While skeletal remains were found at a new unmarked location near site number 11 on Monday, sites number 11 and 12 in Banglagudde, near the bathing ghat of Dharmasthala, were found to be empty on Tuesday. Site number 13, also located near the bathing ghat, will be exhumed on Wednesday.

The investigation into the alleged illegal burials and now potential police misconduct, continues to unfold in Dharmasthala. The SIT is expected to provide updates as the investigation progresses.
