Los Angeles – Top Dodgers prospect Alex Freeland, initially drafted and developed as a shortstop, is proving his versatility early in his major league career as he navigates a series of roster moves that have him shifting between third and second base. Called up from Triple-A Oklahoma City last week, Freeland quickly found himself starting at third base due to Max Muncy’s injury.
However, just as Muncy was set to return from a knee injury, Tommy Edman re-injured his ankle, opening up a longer window for Freeland. With Muncy back at third, manager Dave Roberts is now looking at Freeland to fill in at second base while Hyeseong Kim recovers from shoulder bursitis.
“Alex is going to take some more balls at second base,” Roberts told reporters on Monday. “He’s going to play second base tomorrow, and then on Wednesday, he’s going to kick back over to third base. But I think for Alex, it means that he’s going to just see some more time at second base.”
Despite primarily playing shortstop in the minors, Freeland has experience at second and third, boasting a perfect fielding percentage in his limited innings at second base. He is expected to share time at second with veteran Miguel Rojas and will also provide relief for Muncy at third.
The extended opportunity at the major league level could be a significant chance for the 23-year-old Freeland to prove his worth. He had a solid start, hitting 4-for-13 in his first four games, although with some swing and miss. A solid performance could potentially solidify his place on the roster even after Kim and Edman return from the injured list. While Kim’s return is expected soon, Edman’s remains uncertain.
