**Headline: South Bengal Braces for More Rain as Monsoon Trough Intensifies**

**Kolkata, July 16, 2024** – South Bengal is set to experience another spell of heavy rainfall this week due to the active monsoon trough, according to the latest weather forecast. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of widespread rainfall across the region, accompanied by potential waterlogging and a rise in river water levels.

The monsoon trough is currently positioned over North Bengal and extends from Amritsar, Dehradun, and Shahjahanpur, through Balmikinagar, Chapra, Cooch Behar and further across the northeastern states to Arunachal Pradesh. Adding to the weather system, two cyclonic circulations are present over Northeast Assam and Southern Bangladesh, while two more are over Saurashtra and Southern Rajasthan. Also a cyclonic circulation lies over southwest Bay of Bengal which extends to Tamil Nadu coast.

“Today, Tuesday, Kolkata and all districts in South Bengal can expect light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms,” said an IMD official. “North and South 24 Parganas, Purba and Paschim Bardhaman, Birbhum, Murshidabad, and Nadia districts are also likely to experience similar conditions with lightning.”

The weather office has issued a warning for Wednesday, forecasting heavy rainfall in North and South 24 Parganas, Purba Bardhaman, and Nadia districts. Gusty winds with speeds of 30-40 kmph are also expected in these areas.

Thursday will also see widespread rainfall with heavy rainfall in Murshidabad, Bankura, Purba and Paschim Medinipur and South 24 Parganas. Relief is expected from Friday, though rainfall in North Bengal will increase from Thursday.

Authorities are concerned about rising river water levels due to the continuous downpour. Rivers like Teesta, Torsa, and Jaldhaka in North Bengal are particularly vulnerable, and low-lying areas are at risk of flooding. Residents in these areas are advised to take necessary precautions.

While the rain is expected to bring some respite from the heat, the IMD has also cautioned about high humidity levels, which could lead to discomfort.
