**Former Governor Satyapal Malik Passes Away at 77**
**New Delhi, India** – Former Governor Satyapal Malik, known for his outspokenness and service in multiple Indian states, has passed away at the age of 77. He had been receiving treatment at Delhi’s Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital for an extended period, but doctors were unable to save him. The news was confirmed via Malik’s official X (formerly Twitter) account.
Malik served as Governor of Jammu & Kashmir, Goa, and Meghalaya, among other states, during his distinguished career. A veteran politician who began his career in student politics, Malik was a leader with socialist roots. He was a Member of Parliament. Though aligned with the BJP in recent years, Malik had become increasingly critical of the government.
His last public statement was released by his personal assistant on July 9th, indicating his critical condition. A self-proclaimed disciple of Chaudhary Charan Singh, Malik was a vocal supporter of the farmers’ movement, condemning the government’s handling of the situation and urging the repeal of three controversial farm bills. He openly criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
From 2017 to 2022, Malik served as Governor in five states, including Bihar, Jammu & Kashmir, and Meghalaya. His political career began in 1970, and he won the 1974 assembly election from Baghpat as a candidate of Chaudhary Charan Singh’s Bharatiya Kranti Dal.
Malik’s tenure as Governor of Jammu & Kashmir will be remembered for the abrogation of Article 370 and the state’s reorganization, creating the separate union territory of Ladakh. However, this period was also marked by controversy. He alleged corruption in hydropower projects, leading to the CBI filing charges against him. Malik contested these charges from the hospital, questioning the investigation against someone who had exposed corruption.
Malik remained a vocal critic of the government in the lead-up to the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, urging voters to support the opposition.
