**Meesseman Returns to WNBA, Joins New York Liberty for Final Stretch**
UNCASVILLE, CT – Veteran forward Emma Meesseman is back in the WNBA, signing with the New York Liberty for the remainder of the season. The 2019 Finals MVP, who last played in the league in 2022, cited comfort with the city and a desire to compete for a championship as key factors in her decision.
“I know people here,” Meesseman said, after arriving in Connecticut for the Liberty’s game against the Sun Friday. “It’s a big city. Easy to reach. We’ll see how I feel. We want to win.”
Meesseman’s arrival provides a significant boost to the Liberty, who are currently without star forward Breanna Stewart due to a bone bruise. However, Coach Sandy Brondello kept Meesseman on the bench during Friday night’s game. She had been considering offers from the Minnesota Lynx and Phoenix Mercury.
After focusing on helping Belgium compete on the international stage, Meesseman felt the time was right to return to the WNBA. She acknowledged the league’s growth and the influx of new talent as motivating factors. “It changed,” she said. “I wanted to try it again and see with all these fans following the new players, new young players.”
While familiar faces like Stewart, Jonquel Jones and Natasha Cloud are on the Liberty roster, Meesseman insisted she wanted to make an independent decision. While she received texts, she noted that she doesn’t want to be influenced by other people.
The Liberty waived guard Jaylyn Sherrod to create roster space for Meesseman. The Liberty praised Sherrod’s contribution to the team. The Liberty hope Meesseman’s presence will bolster their chances in a competitive league.
