Sun Aug 03 03:37:40 UTC 2025: **Smithsonian to Update Exhibit on Presidential Impeachments After Controversy**
**Washington, D.C.** – The Smithsonian Institution has announced it will update its exhibit on presidential impeachments at the National Museum of American History to include all such proceedings in U.S. history. The announcement follows criticism and questions surrounding the removal of a placard specifically referencing the impeachments of former President Donald Trump.
The Institution denies that the removal of the original placard was due to political pressure. In a statement released Saturday, the Smithsonian explained that the display was removed because it “failed to meet the museum’s standards in ‘appearance, location, timeline, and overall presentation,’ and was not consistent with other sections in the exhibit.” The Smithsonian emphasized, “We were not asked by any Administration or other government officials to remove content from the exhibit.”
However, reports surfaced claiming the removal followed a “content review” initiated after White House pressure, following issues with an art museum director. The Washington Post reported that the previous exhibit incorrectly stated that “only three presidents have seriously faced removal.”
The initial removal sparked outrage, with critics accusing the Smithsonian of bowing to political influence. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer stated, “You can run, but you cannot hide from the judgment of history…no matter what exhibits you try to distort, the American people will never forget that you were impeached – not once, but twice.”
During his presidency, Trump was impeached twice by the House of Representatives, in 2019 and 2021, but acquitted by the Senate each time. He joins Andrew Johnson and Bill Clinton as the only presidents to be impeached. Richard Nixon also faced near-certain impeachment before resigning.
The Smithsonian maintains that the updated exhibit, expected in the coming weeks, will accurately and comprehensively portray the history of presidential impeachment proceedings in the United States.
