**Starbucks to Phase Out Pickup-Only Stores, Focus on Coffeehouse Experience**

**NEW YORK, NY – [Current Date]** – Starbucks will shutter its grab-and-go pickup-only locations by fiscal year 2026 as part of a comprehensive strategic overhaul spearheaded by CEO Brian Niccol, FOX Business reports. The decision, impacting 80-90 locations, comes as Starbucks aims to revitalize its coffeehouse atmosphere and prioritize in-store experiences.

Niccol, who took the helm in Fall 2024, emphasized the importance of “warmth and human connection” that was lacking in the overly transactional pickup-only model. He believes the company’s robust digital ordering system can provide the same level of convenience without sacrificing the in-store ambiance.

“The goal is to transform the foundations of our North American business,” Niccol told FOX Business’ Liz Claman. Some pickup-only stores will be converted into traditional coffeehouses with seating.

This move is part of Niccol’s “Back to Starbucks” strategy, designed to rebuild the company’s culture and address declining traffic and unionization pressures. The strategy includes streamlining operations by cutting support roles, requiring employees to return to the office, and simplifying the menu to foster innovation and reduce wait times. Starbucks is also working on greater pricing transparency in its mobile app.

To enhance the in-store experience, Starbucks has reintroduced condiment bars, offered mugs for in-store customers, and provided free refills on coffee and tea. The company is also bolstering employee benefits, including doubling parental leave.

Niccol’s efforts are focused on not only boosting profitability but also improving the work environment to create the “unrivaled best job in retail.”
