**West Nile Virus Detected in Contra Costa County Mosquitoes**

*Knightsen, CA –* The Contra Costa Mosquito and Vector Control District announced Thursday the first detection of West Nile virus in mosquitoes this year. A sample collected from a trap in Knightsen, in eastern Contra Costa County, tested positive for the virus.

This discovery follows the confirmation of West Nile virus in a California scrub jay in San Ramon two weeks ago. Other Bay Area counties, including Alameda, Santa Clara, and San Joaquin, have also reported infected birds.

Statewide, the California Department of Public Health has reported seven human cases of West Nile virus this year, with one fatality in Tulare County, all located in Central and Southern California. Last year, a Contra Costa County resident died from the virus, the first reported death in the county since 2006.

“Residents should take steps to protect themselves from West Nile virus and mosquito bites,” urged Steve Schutz, scientific program manager for the Contra Costa Mosquito and Vector Control District. The district recommends using EPA-registered insect repellents containing DEET, Picaridin, Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus, or IR3535.

Residents are also encouraged to report dead birds, which can help track the spread of the virus. Reports can be made by calling (877) 968-2473 or online. Anyone experiencing mosquito issues or with questions can contact the District at (925) 685-9301 or at http://www.contracostamosquito.com.
