**Gary Woodland Makes Rare Albatross, Boosts FedExCup Playoff Hopes at Wyndham Championship**
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Gary Woodland carded a remarkable albatross on Friday at the Wyndham Championship, firing a second-round 64 and surging up the leaderboard as he seeks to secure a spot in the FedExCup Playoffs.
Woodland’s incredible shot came on the par-5 fifth hole at Sedgefield Country Club. Facing 186 yards, he hit a perfect 7-iron that landed just short of the pin and rolled into the hole, sending the crowd into a frenzy. “Nice to see the crowd go nuts to make sure it went in,” Woodland said, adding it was a lot of luck and one he’ll remember.
This marks the second albatross of Woodland’s career, the first occurring during his high school years, also with a 7-iron. The albatross was the 144th on the PGA TOUR since 1963 and the third this season.
The stellar round, Woodland’s best ever at Sedgefield, has propelled him to 9-under par and positioned him to make a significant move in the FedExCup standings. Currently ranked 75th, Woodland is striving to break into the top 70 to qualify for next week’s FedEx St. Jude Championship.
The tournament also marks a personal milestone for Woodland, who is nearly two years removed from brain surgery. While the grind of competition can take its toll, he remains grateful for the opportunity to compete. “A lot worse things I could be doing than out here playing golf so I’m excited to be out here.”
Regardless of his FedExCup fate, the former U.S. Open champion is looking forward to serving as a vice captain for the U.S. Ryder Cup team. He added that he will continue to stay patient and enjoy the process, a message that is his swing coach Randy Smith keeps telling him.
Woodland will continue his quest for a strong finish at the Wyndham Championship this weekend, hoping to capitalize on his momentum and secure his spot in the FedExCup Playoffs.
