**Downtown Cincinnati Beating: Suspect Bonds Out as FBI Investigates Possible Civil Rights Violations**

CINCINNATI (WXIX) – Jermaine Matthews, 39, one of the three suspects arrested in connection with the July 26th beating in downtown Cincinnati, bonded out of jail Thursday after Hamilton County prosecutors filed additional charges against him.

Matthews, of East Price Hill, is accused of coordinating the “violent attack” at Fourth and Elm streets, which has sparked outrage and concerns about public safety in the downtown area. He initially faced charges of aggravated riot and assault after turning himself in Tuesday.

During his arraignment Wednesday, Judge Michael Peck set his bond at $100,000. However, that amount was increased to $270,000 on Thursday, after two counts of felonious assault and one count of misdemeanor assault were added. If released, Matthews will be on house arrest and required to wear an ankle monitor.

According to a criminal complaint, police allege video evidence shows Matthews “punching and stomping on (a) victim with his hands and feet attempting to cause serious physical harm.” He is also accused of dragging an unconscious person into the street and assaulting another victim.

Two other suspects, previously identified as Merriweather and Matthews, were arraigned. Defense attorneys argue their clients were struck first. Two additional suspects charged in connection with the incident remain at large.

The Hamilton County Grand Jury will consider the case for indictment on August 8th.

Adding another layer to the investigation, the FBI is now looking into the incident to determine if any civil rights violations occurred.

Authorities are urging anyone with information about the attack to contact Crime Stoppers at 513-352-3040.
