Sat Aug 02 12:01:45 UTC 2025: ## Tirunelveli Police Crackdown on Social Media Hate Speech, Arrest 82
**Tirunelveli, August 2, 2025:** The Tirunelveli Rural Police have made significant strides in combating the spread of hate speech and the glorification of violence on social media, arresting 82 individuals in 81 separate cases since the beginning of the year. According to a statement released today by Superintendent of Police N. Silambarasan, the police have been actively monitoring online platforms for posts designed to incite clashes between different caste and religious groups.
The special cyber crime unit has been instrumental in identifying and tracking individuals posting objectionable content, as well as those who share and comment on such posts. The crackdown also targets individuals showcasing lethal weapons on social media, a measure aimed at preventing real-world violence.
“Even though the police are organising awareness sessions in schools and colleges consistently, such posts are still circulating on social media for creating unrest between different caste and religious groups,” Mr. Silambarasan stated. “Thanks to the constant monitoring of social media, police have so far registered 81 cases and arrested 82 people over the past seven months since January. Police will take stringent action against the anti-social elements if they are found to be spreading panic and unrest through their social media posts.”
This proactive approach reflects a growing concern over the potential for social media to fuel real-world tensions and violence in the region. The Tirunelveli Rural Police have emphasized their commitment to maintaining peace and order by actively policing online spaces and holding individuals accountable for their online behavior.
